T minus 3 Days and Counting

I am positively vibrating with nervous anticipation about our impending return to the US. I suppose I should be channeling that energy into some productive activity like doing laundry or cleaning my bathroom, but as soon as I walk into another room, I forget my intentions then wander around in a daze for a little bit, then I come back to the computer to search for some needed peice of information (such as the duty rates on Australian wine) but as soon as I log onto the internet, I forget what it was I was wondering about and become anxious that I should be doing something more productive.

Wheeee!

Really, I am alway super relaxed before I go home, that's a place where I dont need to worry too much, even there's surprises sometimes, even it's not always pleasant, I am always excited rather than anxious.

If you drink hard alcohol at all, go to Walgreens/CVS/Rite Aid/Costco and buy as much as you can stuff into your luggage for the return trip as you can. Forget the wine, it's not really worth it (not to me anyway:). Even if god forbid they force you to pay the duty on it, it's still worth it. 1.75 litres of most average stuff is around $20 or less in the US. Duty on a bottle that size will be around $50 AUD. Even at $70 the equivalent best price you can get in NSW is $100 for the same amount (given Bacardi, Gin, Vodka, etc) Duty is calculated on volume of alcohol. For spirits, it's ~$66 per litre, and 5%. Probably the same for wine, but you can find the schedules on the Customs website buried in multi-part PDF documents. For something that has 40% by volume, it's 40% of $66, and 5% of the value =~$50. I unintentionally went over early last year and got charged $50 per bottle for Vodka. If it's similar for wine, you should get charged at least $10 per bottle at 14% alcohol.
